Under the Sea

February, 2008

One of my newest gardens is "under the sea" on our patio.  Since it's right outside my kitchen door it was originally an herb garden. Although it  gets some sun - it was not enough to sustain an herb garden.  Besides, I can usually find the herbs I need at grocery stores these days and my garden space is precious!

After a season of allowing the bed get weedy I decided it was time to "fix" the bed.  I was talking to my neighbor (who is also a gardener) and she was telling me about a program she had watched. Someone had used plants to make a garden that looked as if it were growing under the sea.

I decided sedums look a lot like coral so I bought about a dozen different varieties.  I added a small bee balm, native cactus, and 3 euphorbias.  I placed rocks so I can get into the bed to weed.  I've also placed a small stone like frog and a piece of coral that I was given several years ago on one of the rocks.  I need to dig up 2 large clumps of garlic chives but I want to find something to put in their place first.  I'm going to have to hit the nurseries this spring to find other plants that will give the impression of an ocean bed.
