While cruising in 2003 we stopped in Key West for the day. After taking a bus tour of the island we headed for the butterfly conservatory which had recently opened. It was not very
big but it was very interesting.
There were lots of butterflies in various stages of life. The folks working there obviously loved butterflies and were more than willing to spend time talking about them. Most of the butterflies here (as well as most conservatories) are not natives to the area.
Since the butterflies are inside a
greenhouse, there were lots of
beautiful flowers but by far the Pentas were the butterflies favorites.
More popular than the Pentas were the numerous plates of bananas and other fruit located throughout the conservatory.
I was lucky enough to have a butterfly decide to hitch a ride on my leg as I walked
around
the conservatory. Since people are not allowed to touch
butterflies under any circumstances I had to find an employee
to
"brush" it off before I could leave. If I ever make it back to Key West I will make sure to return to the Butterfly Conservatory!
